ExploreMeasurement and conversions

The cryo-bay sensor runs from -10 to 40 degrees C. What does it read?

-10010203040°C
  1. 35°C
  2. 20°C
  3. 30°C
  4. 25°C
Need a hint?

Count the ticks from -10; each tick is 5 degrees.

Answer & method
Answer D: 25°C

The level is 7 ticks above -10, and each tick is 5 degrees: -10 + 7 x 5 = 25 degrees C.

ReasonMeasurement and conversions

Read the fuel tank gauge, then give the amount in mL.

04020L
  1. 1600
  2. 16
  3. 12000
  4. 16000
Need a hint?

Read the L first, then multiply by 1000 to change it to mL.

Answer & method
Answer D: 16000

The needle shows 16 L. 16 x 1000 = 16000 mL.

StretchMeasurement and conversions

A water tank holds 16 l. Two amounts are poured out: 1822 ml, then 3041 ml. How many ml are left?

Start: 16000 mlFirst cut1822 mlSecond cut3041 mlLeft?
  1. 20863
  2. 11137
  3. 14178
  4. 14137
Need a hint?

Subtract both cuts from the start; a bar model can help you see the parts.

Answer & method
Answer B: 11137

16000 - 1822 - 3041 = 11137 ml.

Ideas to practise

  • Measurement and conversions. Use the same unit before adding or comparing measurements.
  • Area and composite shapes. Find the area of the whole and subtract missing parts. Boundary lengths and square units answer different questions.

A game mission has 8 untimed questions. Only the game saves choices and hints. A finished mission earns one launch charge and participation towards the Deep-space array in Galaxy Command. The chapter goal is 8 different questions in finished sets; hints and wrong answers count as participation, not mastery. Some craft systems link more than one chapter.

Choose a level

Explore

Foundations: read a representation and practise the underlying idea.

  • Read a dial and convert its units
  • Track a temperature change on a thermometer
  • Convert mixed units before comparing them
  • Choose the most sensible unit or measurement
  • Judge three statements about shapes and units
Play Explore

Reason

Paper-style reasoning: connect clues, interpret a diagram or work backwards.

  • Read a dial and convert its units
  • Find an unknown mass from a balanced scale
  • Convert mixed units before comparing them
  • Solve a multi-step measurement word problem
  • Track a temperature change on a thermometer
  • Judge three statements about shapes and units
  • Find the area from rounds or a length ratio

Stretch

Higher-order practice: link conditions, test statements and avoid a tempting wrong method.

Levels change representations, clues and conditions, not just the numbers. These are practice formats, not validated exam-equivalent difficulty.

Using the feedback

Learning reports distinguish hinted answers from independent first choices. They consider up to 20 recent different, unhinted questions per skill and level, and wait for at least five before suggesting extra practice. Repeating the same question does not add evidence. Reports are practice evidence, not IQ scores, diagnoses, ranks or predictions of competition results.

Ask the learner to explain a drawing or check with objects too. Choose Explore or an earlier chapter when a step feels too large.

Sources & limits

The grade topics use SOF IMO Class 5 published topic syllabus as their primary reference. The SOF sample and CREST previous-year paper below informed representations and reasoning demands. Providers have different topic boundaries; their syllabi are not interchangeable.

Questions, diagrams, picture choices, hints and explanations are original Otterly work, not copied paper questions or publisher artwork. No Olympiad provider is affiliated with or endorses Space Academy. This is not complete exam preparation; follow classroom teaching and check the current official syllabus too. Independent educator review is still needed for difficulty and breadth.

Content and coverage notes. To report a confusing question, describe the grade, chapter, level and question on the contact page. Do not send children’s personal information.
