ExploreVisual reasoning

The picture pattern below repeats. Which shape completes the pattern where the ? is?

?
  1. circle
  2. star
  3. hexagon
  4. rectangle
Need a hint?

Find the shortest group of shapes that repeats, then continue it to the ?.

Answer & method
Answer C: hexagon

The group hexagon, star repeats. Picture 5 is picture 1 of the group, so the missing shape is a hexagon.

ReasonWorking backwards

In a class of 35, 19 play music, 17 play chess and 5 play neither. How many play only music?

  1. 13
  2. 6
  3. 14
  4. 11
Need a hint?

Find how many play both games first, then take them away from the group that plays your game.

Answer & method
Answer A: 13

Both = 19 + 17 - (35 - 5) = 6. Only music = 19 - 6 = 13.

StretchVisual reasoning

The picture matrix below follows a rule. Which picture belongs where the ? is?

?
  1. blue square
  2. blue star
  3. purple square
  4. purple star
Need a hint?

Compare row 1 with row 2: what changed in the shapes and what changed in the colour?

Answer & method
Answer C: purple square

Row 2 is row 1 with the two shapes swapped and the colour changed to purple, so the missing picture is a purple square.

Ideas to practise

  • Comparing quantities. Compare the values, not the size or spacing of their pictures.
  • Direction sense. Track north/south and east/west movements separately.
  • Ranking and order. Include the person being counted when converting a rank from one end to the other.
  • Clocks and elapsed time. Separate hours and minutes. There are 60 minutes in one hour.
  • Coding and decoding. Apply the stated code consistently to each letter.
  • Number patterns. Look for the same change between neighbouring numbers.
  • Visual reasoning. Track the position, orientation and markings, not just the outline. Check every part of a picture.
  • Possible combinations. Match each choice in the first group with every allowed choice in the second.
  • Working backwards. Undo the last operation first, then undo the earlier operation.
  • Sorting by a rule. Check which object does not share the named property.
  • Calendars. Read the weekday headings. A week has seven days; count intervals, not both endpoints.
  • Shapes and their properties. Count straight sides and corners carefully. A curved edge is not a straight side.
  • Routes and constraints. Follow only the allowed paths. At a junction, add the ways arriving from its incoming paths.

A game mission has 8 untimed questions. Only the game saves choices and hints. A finished mission earns one launch charge and participation towards the Habitat pod in Galaxy Command. The chapter goal is 8 different questions in finished sets; hints and wrong answers count as participation, not mastery. Some craft systems link more than one chapter.

Explore

Foundations: read a representation and practise the underlying idea.

  • Arrange numbers in order and pick one by position
  • Find where a walk with turns ends from the start
  • Work out a family relation from linked clues
  • Read a mirror clock or the angle between hands
  • Crack a letter or number word code
  • Fill the missing term in a letter series
  • Complete a picture matrix by its hidden rule
  • Combine ranks counted from both ends of a queue
  • Find the mirror or water image of letters
  • Count allowed combinations from two groups
Play Explore

Reason

Paper-style reasoning: connect clues, interpret a diagram or work backwards.

  • Order people from linked comparison clues
  • Find a compass direction from linked positions
  • Crack a letter or number word code
  • Read a mirror clock or the angle between hands
  • Fill the missing term in a number series
  • Count holes, pieces or posts after folding or cutting
  • Find the overlap or one part of a two-group survey
  • Pick the odd one out of numbers or words
  • Reason about days of the week from a clue
  • Follow turning instructions on a grid map

Stretch

Higher-order practice: link conditions, test statements and avoid a tempting wrong method.

  • Use ranks in a row before and after a swap
  • Find where a walk with turns ends from the start
  • Count every square or triangle in a figure
  • Find the overlap or one part of a two-group survey
  • Find the real finishing places from a prediction board
  • Count allowed combinations from two groups
  • Complete a picture matrix by its hidden rule
  • Count the routes across a junction grid
  • Follow turning instructions on a grid map
  • Combine ranks counted from both ends of a queue

Levels change representations, clues and conditions, not just the numbers. These are practice formats, not validated exam-equivalent difficulty.

Using the feedback

Learning reports distinguish hinted answers from independent first choices. They consider up to 20 recent different, unhinted questions per skill and level, and wait for at least five before suggesting extra practice. Repeating the same question does not add evidence. Reports are practice evidence, not IQ scores, diagnoses, ranks or predictions of competition results.

Ask the learner to explain a drawing or check with objects too. Choose Explore or an earlier chapter when a step feels too large.

Sources & limits

The grade topics use SOF IMO Class 5 published topic syllabus as their primary reference. The SOF sample and CREST previous-year paper below informed representations and reasoning demands. Providers have different topic boundaries; their syllabi are not interchangeable.

Questions, diagrams, picture choices, hints and explanations are original Otterly work, not copied paper questions or publisher artwork. No Olympiad provider is affiliated with or endorses Space Academy. This is not complete exam preparation; follow classroom teaching and check the current official syllabus too. Independent educator review is still needed for difficulty and breadth.
