How to Do Long Division Step by Step

Long division breaks big division problems into a series of smaller, manageable steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down. By repeating this cycle for each digit of the dividend, children can solve problems that would otherwise feel overwhelming.

This tool uses a bracket layout (sometimes called the bus stop method) with individual digit cells so kids fill in one number at a time — exactly the way it's taught on paper and in the Math Tank app.

Why Practise Long Division Online?

Interactive practice gives children instant feedback, which research shows speeds up learning. Instead of completing a worksheet and waiting for a teacher's mark, kids know immediately whether each digit is correct.

Our tool is free, requires no sign-up, and works on phones, tablets and computers — perfect for homework help or a quick revision session before a test.

Tips for Teaching Long Division to Kids

Start with small divisors (2–5) so your child can rely on basic multiplication facts they already know. Once the process feels automatic, gradually increase the difficulty.

Encourage children to say each step out loud: "How many times does 3 go into 7?" Verbalising the thinking helps cement the method and makes it easier to spot mistakes early.
